Neural Dynamics Underlying Event-Related Pot en tials

چکیده
There are two opposing hypotheses about the brain mechanisms underlying sensory event-related potentials (ERPs). One holds that sensory ERPs are generated by phase resetting of ongoing electroencephalographic (EEG) activity, and the other that they result fiom signal averaging of stimulus-evoked neural responses. We tested several contrasting predictions of these hypotheses by direct intracortical analysis of neural activity in monkeys. Our findings clearly demonstrate evoked response contributions to the sensory ERP in the monkey, and they suggest the likelihood that a mixed (EvokedPiiase Resetting) model may account for the generation of scalp ERPs in humans.

Introducing numerical bounds to improve event-based neural network simulation
Although the spike-trains in neural networks are mainly constrained by the neural dynamics itself, global temporal constraints (refractoriness, time precision, propagation delays, ..) are also to be taken into account. These constraints are revisited in this paper in order to use them in event-based simulation paradigms. We first review these constraints, and discuss their consequences at the s...
متن کاملImpaired theta phase-resetting underlying auditory N1 suppression in chronic alcoholism.
It has been suggested that chronic alcoholism may lead to altered neural mechanisms related to inhibitory processes. Here, we studied auditory N1 suppression phenomena (i.e. amplitude reduction with repetitive stimuli) in chronic alcoholic patients as an early-stage information-processing brain function involving inhibition by the analysis of the N1 event-related potential and time-frequency co...
متن کاملEvent-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces
Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...

متن کاملThe oscillatory dynamics of recognition memory and its relationship to event-related responses.
The large-scale neural dynamics underlying higher cognitive processes are characterized by at least three types of stimulus-response: (i) the resetting of ongoing oscillatory brain activity without concomitant changes in response amplitude (phase alignment response); (ii) the addition of response amplitude to the ongoing brain activity in a time-locked manner (evoked response); and (iii) the ad...
